Thais have little to be proud of

วันนี้อ่าน Bangkok Post คอลัมม์ Post Bag ที่เป็นจดหมายจากทางบ้านส่งเข้ามา ฉบับหนี่งจั่วหัวว่า Thais have little to be proud of ฝรั่งคนหนึ่งเขียนมาเล่าประสบการณ์ทีี่เค้าพบเห็นคนไทยในสายตาเขา คนไทยที่ภูมิใจในความเป็นไทยเพราะว่าสังคมกระหน่ำบอกว่าเราควรภูมิใจ และก็เป็นเหตุผลเดียวกับว่าทำไมเราถึงให้เสื้อเหลือง และเหตุผลเดียวกันกับเราไปลงประชามติรับร่างรัฐธรรมนูญ เพราะว่า เขากรอกหูว่าเราต้องใส่ และเราต้องไปรับร่างไม่งั้นเราจะเป็นพวกนอกคอก ไม่รักสถาบัน และเป็นไม่ประชาธิปไตย โดยไม่สนใจแก่นสารของมันเลย ผมเห็นด้วยกับฝรั่งคนนี้ที่บอกว่า เราร้องเพลงชาติไทยทุกวันวันละสองครั้ง อย่างไร้สติ และหยิ่งทนงกับคำว่า ไทย อย่างไร้เหตุผลและเลื่อนลอย ศาสนาคริสต์กล่าวถึงบาปมหันต์อยู่เจ็ดอย่าง หรือที่เรียกว่า Seven Deadly Sins ในกรณีนี้บาปมหันต์ของเราก็คือ pride หรือ ความภูมิใจ ใช่หรือไม่?

After living in this country for about a year, with the food, new sights and sounds and things wearing off. Thai people still never cease to amaze me.

They all tell farang that they are all so proud of being Thai, but I have come to believe they are either lying or they don’t really have a clue what they are saying.

At the Rama4/Silom intersection on Oct 15, I noticed hordes of people gathered. There was a guy face down in the street, his motorbike on top of him.

Everyone was just staring; no one was helping him. My Thai friend asked what happened. It seems a bus hit the motorbike and, of course, drove off, without any respect of the victim.

All the Thais were staring like a bunch of sheep, and not doing anything that might help the guy, so I run up to him.

But some people tell me: “Not go, police come, you in trouble.”

I don’t listen and just as I reach the victim the police arrive. Three officers just look around, talk to some people, ignoring the victim and me.After about another 15 minutes he’s driven off by the police.

Xenophobic Thais sing the national anthem every morning and tell every foreigner how proud they are to be Thai. But when it comes down to it, they would let a fellow countryman die in the street out of fear for the police.

Amazing Thailand indeed. I’m sorry, your country is indeed amazing — amazing in hypocrisy, that is.
